Objects In Mirrors: Objects In Mirrors Are Closer Than They Appear

And now, it's time for our long-distance dedication. And this week, it's long distance indeed. Pavel, from Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, writes:

"Dear Casey, I write to you from behind the Iron Curtain. Life is tough here in Czechoslovakia in 1981. The Sixth Five-Year Plan has failed, and the Soviet Union is scaling back oil exports, leaving our economy hurting. We have little to look forward to here in Communist Czechoslovakia, except perhaps a Seventh Five-Year Plan. For us young Czechs and Slovaks, life is bleak.

"Except when we look west to our estranged friends in America and their rock and roll. You may find it hard to believe, but American rock music is popular in the Czechoslovak underground. My friend Vaclav in Prague recently turned me on to what you in America call 'power pop.' Among my favorites are bands like The Knack, Greg Kihn and Romeo Void, but my favorite band of all is one that I do not think is even well known in America. They are called Objects in Mirrors, and they are from the city of Charlotte, in North Carolina.

"Casey, the American Top 40 gives hope to we who live under Soviet rule. We look to a day when the Iron Curtain will raise, the Berlin Wall will fall, and we will rock with our Western brothers. Until that time, with the help of Radio Free Europe and the underground, we keep the flame burning in our hearts.

"Casey, for all of the fans here in Czechoslovakia, could you please play the Objects In Mirrors hit, 'You Drove Your 944 Straight Into My Heart'? And please dedicate it to Nina.

    "Yours in struggle, Pavel."
