Mikel Dimmick Spiral Joy Band: Thanks, Tea Bazaar
Last Friday's show at the Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar in Charlottesville wrapped up the Spiral Joys' four-month series there, and what a wrap it was: Go! players Pat Lawrence and Mahlon Hoard opened with a set of duo performances, then brought Nathan in on kit for a couple trio numbers. Then a trio Spiral Joy took the riser (Amy having sat this one out) for some gongs and bowls and flutes and harmonium changeups, with Pat eventually returning to add bowed bowl and bowed bass, then Mahlon joining in on soporano and tenor saxes as Nathan returned to kit, Mikel held down a series of harmonium clusters and I switched from fiddle to shenai. A lush ending to a series that started with January's twitchy street somnabulism (recording from that show bound for Sloo Tapes release, I think), February's string-screech workout and March's groove-and-marionette antics. Thanks, Tea Bazaarians, it was fun.
