  • Black Twig Pickers: Shows with Charlie Parr this week

Howdy, friends: If you're in the vicinity of Charlottesville or Roanoke this Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 14 and Jan. 15, consider coming out to catch the devastating ray of (sonic) light that is the music of Charlie Parr, who is down from Duluth on one of his occasional forays toward this corner of the continent.

For a hint of what tends to ensue when Charlie's around, check the take on "John Hardy" now posted on the Black Twig myspace site, recorded on last fall amid a Parr/Twig romp through Minnesota and Wisconsin.

For some probably better representations of what Charlie's about, check here or here or here or....................any of the many other Parr clips on youtube or around the web. Mr. Parr will have his tackle box of cds along, surely, with fresh copies of "Roustabout" and others from the catalog.

    Anyhow, here's the itinerary:

On Wednesday, the Black Twig Pickers will be playing with Charlie and also with Charlottesvillians Carlton James & Friends at the IS venue in C-ville. It's the old Starr Hill space -- now Si, Tapas downstairs and IS upstairs. SI, IS. Yep.

We'll be busking out on the mall beforehand if the weather's suitably non-Duluthian, although at this moment the forecast looks rather bleak for such pursuits.

On Thursday, we're in Roanoke at Kirk Avenue Music. The Rootstone Jug Band will kick off the show, and the Black Twigs will play some with Charlie as the evening proceeds. This'll be an early show -- starts at 7:30 p.m., I think, so plan accordingly.

ALSO, local artist Sue Nees (who crafted the cover of the Black Twig Hobo Handshake album, among many, many other fine creations) is contributing something for everyone who attends the Roanoke show -- years ago, Sue made souvenir cards for Spiral Joy Band shows; no idea if that's what's in store this time or if something else is envisioned ---------

Come on out and catch some fantastic music from Mr. Parr, et al, art from Ms. Nees, and the general ecstatic glow of a night well spent --
